Oshawa – (Agencies)
A child was killed and two other people were seriously injured as a result of a fire that broke out in a residential trailer in the city of Oshawa east of Toronto, Saturday morning, according to Durham Regional Police.
The police explained in a statement that emergency teams were called to the Bond Street East area near Wilson Road South at around five o’clock in the morning, after reports of flames rising from a residential trailer.
When firefighters arrived, the fire had consumed a large part of the trailer, and they were later able to extinguish the fire and rescue three people who were inside, including a child whose age was not disclosed, who later died from his injuries.
Ambulance services confirmed that two adults were transported to the hospital in critical condition, while the police fire unit opened an investigation to determine the causes of the fire and the surrounding circumstances, in cooperation with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office.
The police said in their statement:
“We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family, and the investigation is still ongoing to determine whether there were criminal reasons behind the incident.”
Authorities indicated that the area surrounding the fire site will remain temporarily closed to traffic until the forensic examination is completed.
This incident is the second fatal fire in the Durham area during the current month of October, prompting local authorities to renew calls to check smoke alarm systems and ensure their readiness in homes and residential trailers.
