Toronto —
A Toronto police officer was shot during an armed confrontation that took place in the north of the city, in an incident that sparked a wide security alert and led to the closure of the surrounding area for hours.
The incident occurred while the police were responding to a security report, where events escalated into an exchange of gunfire between one of the suspects and the police officers on site.
The officer was injured during the confrontation and was rushed to the hospital for treatment, while authorities confirmed that his injury is not considered life-threatening.
After controlling the situation, the police arrested one of the suspects, while additional security units spread in the area to secure the site and collect evidence.
The area witnessed a wide security cordon with the closure of several roads and the removal of residents and passersby from the scene of the incident, while investigators began examining evidence and hearing witnesses.
Due to the injury of one of the police officers during the incident, the file was referred to the independent investigation authority in Ontario, according to the procedures followed in cases involving the use of firearms and serious injuries related to law enforcement operations.
Authorities have not yet disclosed all the details of the incident or the possible motives behind it, while investigations continue to determine the full sequence of events and the circumstances that led to the outbreak of gunfire.
The incident comes at a time when security agencies in the Toronto area continue to face increasing challenges related to armed crimes, amid repeated calls to enhance efforts to reduce the spread of illegal weapons and protect the safety of both police officers and the community alike.
