Controversy in Brentford after raising "Santa is not real" banners during the annual Santa parade
Residents are upset and the organizers clarify their position
Published: December 2, 2025
The annual Santa Claus parade in Brantford, Ontario, sparked widespread controversy after signs were placed on a house located directly on the parade route bearing phrases such as “Santa isn’t real” and “Stop lying to your children,” which shocked and upset many families participating in the festive event.
What happened?
According to participants’ testimonies and photos published by CBC News, the signs were raised on a house opposite a hall close to the route, making them clearly visible to thousands of children and their families who came to enjoy the show.
Some parents reported that they had to move their children away from the area after noticing their reaction to the written phrases, considering the parade a festive occasion meant to bring joy to children, not a place for such discussions.
One mother who attended the parade told CBC:
“The children were excited to see Santa… we did not expect to encounter signs like this at a family event.”
No legal violation… but presence of controversy
The police and parade organizers confirmed that no law was broken, as the signs were placed on private property, and there are no restrictions preventing the homeowner from displaying them.
However, the event organizers said they understand why parents were upset, explaining that the parade is based on the “spirit of the season” and that they do not encourage any behavior that could spoil the festive atmosphere.
One organization said:
“We cannot control what people choose to display on their property, but it is unfortunate that this happens during an event that is supposed to be full of joy.”
The event continued despite the controversy
Despite the commotion caused by the signs, the parade proceeded without any disruption, witnessing wide participation from families, music bands, and volunteers who roamed the streets of Brantford amid a festive atmosphere.
Widespread interaction on social media
Photos taken by participants quickly spread on social media platforms, where reactions were divided between:
Those who saw raising the signs as “inappropriate” at a children’s event.
And those who considered it “freedom of expression” even if controversial.
However, the majority of comments expressed sympathy for the children who saw the phrases, considering that the event is not a place to spoil childhood imagination.
The appearance of signs denying the existence of Santa Claus during the annual Brantford parade caused a wave of discontent among families, despite not violating any law.
While the event continued successfully, the signs sparked a broader discussion about protecting family events from provocative messages and the limits of freedom of expression at public occasions targeting children.
