Canada launches the new digital visa system and chooses Morocco as the first country in the world to pilot the program

Published: December 1, 2025

The Canadian government announced the launch of a new and innovative system for obtaining the Digital Visa electronic visa, as part of a pilot program aimed at simplifying travel procedures and enhancing data security. Canada chose the Kingdom of Morocco to be the first country in the world to adopt this system for its citizens, according to the official website of the Canadian immigration portal.

Fully digital visa without paper documents

The new system aims to:
Accelerate visa application processing
Reduce traditional paperwork
Spare travelers the need to visit consulates or embassies
Raise the level of security efficiency through a secure digital platform
The digital visa is stored on a secure electronic platform, allowing travelers to manage their documents easily, reducing the risks of losing or damaging passports, in addition to minimizing common bureaucratic errors in traditional systems.

Pilot phase targeted at a limited group

The Canadian government explained that the first phase of the project will target a limited group of Moroccan citizens who hold a valid Canadian visitor visa, as they will receive a digital copy of their visa alongside the usual stamp on their passport.
The Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship seeks to collect real data and user experiences in a real environment, before expanding the system to include other countries.

Active Moroccan community in Canada

This initiative comes at a time when Morocco leads the Maghreb countries in terms of the number of its citizens who have obtained Canadian citizenship. The number of naturalized Moroccans reached 1,835 during the first half of 2025, according to government data.

A step paving the way for a new digital era in international travel

This program represents a first step towards full digitization of travel procedures, which may pave the way for adopting electronic visas as a final alternative to the paper stamp, as part of a broad Canadian strategy to develop the immigration system and establish smoother and safer travel pathways.
