Canada begins disbursing the enhanced installment of the grocery and essential needs allowance

Increase in the value of quarterly support for low- and middle-income families to address rising food and living costs

Canada begins disbursing the enhanced installment of the grocery and essential needs allowance

Ottawa —
Canada began today disbursing the first installment of the enhanced grocery and basic needs allowance, in a step aimed at alleviating the living pressures on millions of families and individuals affected by rising food and daily goods prices.

The new installment comes as part of a financial support program automatically paid to eligible individuals, without the need to submit a separate application, with the entitlement amount depending on annual income, family status, and the number of children registered within the family.

The program in its enhanced form replaces the previous support linked to the goods and services tax credit, with an increase in the value of quarterly payments, providing low-income families with additional financial space to face grocery, rent, and basic bill costs.

The program benefits individuals and families with low and middle incomes, provided they have filed their tax returns, as the Canada Revenue Agency uses tax information to determine eligibility and payment amounts.

Amounts are disbursed via direct deposit or postal checks, depending on the payment method registered with the Revenue Agency, and some beneficiaries may notice the amount arriving in their accounts in the coming days depending on the financial institution or approved payment method.

This step comes at a time when food prices still pose a significant burden on Canadian families, despite some inflation indicators slowing down, as the cost of daily necessities remains a top concern for a wide segment of citizens.

The government sees enhancing this allowance as a direct measure to support purchasing power, while critics consider that the assistance, despite its importance, does not address the root causes of the rising cost of living crisis, especially in housing, food, and disposable income for families.
