Paris —
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Paris to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron, in a visit preceding the G7 summit and amid pressing international issues dominating the agenda of Western allies.
The talks between the two sides are expected to address bilateral relations between Canada and France, coordination ahead of the G7 summit, in addition to issues of international security, defense, trade, energy, and technology.
The visit gains special importance as it comes before the G7 leaders' meetings, where Ottawa and Paris seek to align positions on current economic and geopolitical challenges.
Carney and Macron are also expected to discuss ways to enhance cooperation in the fields of defense industries, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and supply chains, as part of a broader Canadian approach to strengthen relations with European partners.
Carney's European tour comes at a time when his government is working to diversify Canada's economic and defense partnerships, amid ongoing trade and political tensions with the United States.
The Canadian Prime Minister is expected to later move on to the G7 meetings, where global economy, security, energy, the war in Ukraine, and tensions in the Middle East will be among the main issues on the leaders' agenda.
