Ottawa —
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that his government is moving towards reshaping the future of energy in the country, emphasizing that controlling the energy sector is an essential part of protecting economic stability and national sovereignty.
Carney said, in a post on the "X" platform, that "controlling energy means controlling our destiny," announcing his government's commitment to doubling the capacity of the Canadian electricity grid by 2050.
He explained that the plan aims to provide clean, reliable, and affordable energy across Canada, as part of a broader strategy to enhance energy security and reduce dependence on foreign markets and geopolitical fluctuations.
Carney's statements come at a time when global markets are facing increasing pressures due to energy disruptions caused by the war in the Middle East and rising oil and gas prices, in addition to growing concerns related to climate change.
The federal government recently unveiled a national clean electricity strategy that includes massive investments to expand the electricity grid, support hydro, nuclear, wind, and solar energy projects, alongside granting natural gas a transitional role in some regions.
Ottawa also seeks to accelerate energy infrastructure projects and enhance electrical interconnection between provinces, aiming to meet the increasing demand resulting from population growth and the shift towards electric vehicles and clean industries.
Observers believe that through this strategy, the government is trying to present a long-term economic vision linking energy security, industrial growth, and strategic independence, especially amid the rapid global transformations in energy markets and technology.
